If only it were that easy right? If your baby isn’t sleeping, you aren’t sleeping either which can be a huge drain on your everyday life and make even the simplest things become impossible. Being constantly deprived of sleep can also make you more prone to depression and mood fluctuations.
There are so many reasons that your baby might be waking up during the night and your baby won’t sleep unless being held. The most common are pretty simple and probably what you would expect. Your infant may be hungry, might be teething, or she might just need you sometimes during the night. Something else that many new parents don’t think of is that your infant needs to have a consistent bedtime routine so she can start to get used to and understand when it’s bedtime.
Overtired Baby Won’t Go To Sleep!
Right after you bring your baby home and for the first several weeks, don’t expect her to sleep through the night. They are still figuring out life and haven’t developed any sort of good sleep habits. You can expect her to sleep for varying amounts of time from a few minutes to a few hours, around the clock.
It is very common for an infant to wake up during the night for many months, for no real reason. This doesn’t fall into the category of your baby having sleep problems. Some would say that you might want to just let nature take its course and let your child figure out how to sleep through the night on their own time, but if it is getting to the point where you aren’t coping with the lack of sleep or it’s affecting your parenting, you might want to give another option a try.

Is my baby not sleeping because she’s hungry?
It is widely believed that infants need to eat quite often, and in particular, breastfed babies might need even more frequent feedings. This is due to not being able to really gauge how much she is eating when breast feeding. The actual process of breast feeding can be more involved which can make an infant become wider awake when feeding during the night.
For infants that eat formula when feeding generally don’t wake up quite as often due to formula taking longer to digest which leaves your baby feeling full for a longer time between feedings.
Any infant that is younger than about 6 weeks old can be expected to wake up several times during the night. Once you pass that 6 week hump, many infants will start to show signs of developing a sleep pattern. You may see them getting drowsy in the evenings and may sleep for larger amounts of time. This is a good sign that you can try some of the techniques on this site to get her sleeping through the night.

Newborns sleep like cats and generally sleep for 16 hours or more each day in short bursts. I don’t mean to compare your baby to an animal but the analogy fits pretty well. The older your baby gets, the longer she will sleep between feedings, turning those short sleep sessions into longer ones. You will notice that your infant will start to develop their own sleep rhythm over time. During the first year or so of your infants life, she should begin to start sleeping about 10 hours a night. To decrease the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), it is suggested that your infant sleep in the same room with you, but in their own crib, for 6 months to 1 year.
Never sleep in the same bed with your baby. There are so many ways an infant can be harmed or killed while sleeping in an adult bed. Infants can move around and find their way between the headboard and the mattress, between the mattress and the wall, or between the mattress and the frame of the bed. Sleeping with your child can also be dangerous because it is so easy to fall asleep and roll over on your baby or simply moving just enough that you cover the baby’s nose and mouth, leading to suffocation.
Helping your baby to become a good sleeper
Middle of the night feedings are guaranteed to be disruptive for parents but these tips below and the info on the rest of this site can without a doubt, give you your sleep back.
Create a bedtime routine that is calming for you and your baby. This may be a soothing bath, cuddling with a book, or sitting in a dimly lit room with some soft music. Over-stimulation can make it difficult for your baby to settle down and sleep so make sure that noise and visual stimulation is at a minimum. Try to start this bed time routine before your infant is already falling asleep.Give your baby time to wind down before sleep. Your baby may fuss when you put her down to sleep but give her a few minutes to wind down and get comfortable. Put your baby to bed when she’s drowsy, but not yet asleep. Putting your infant to bed before they are asleep will help her to start to associate laying in bed with falling asleep. Pacifiers aren’t all bad. You might read all kinds of negative talk about pacifiers but if your baby has trouble winding down and getting comfortable, you might try using a pacifier. Using a pacifier during sleep has been shown to help to reduce the risk of SIDS.Try to keep night time changes or feedings quick and calm. During the night, if your baby wakes when you feed or change her diaper, try to be very quiet, be very calm, and don’t turn on bright lights. This can help to keep your baby from fully waking up and thinking it’s time to socialize. Limit feedings to 30 minutes or less if possible. Leave the room as soon as you can.Your baby makes the rules. Ultimately, you may need to change your routines and schedule to fit your infants sleep schedule.
